Sample Student Response #1

Annotation: The student unnecessarily begins the response by restating the question, "Billie Wind shows understanding of the setting." The student uses text references but does not explain how the character demonstrates an understanding of the setting. For example, "When she is looking for a campground, Billie Wind was able to tell which place was best by simply looking at the trees," however the student fails to explain Billie Wind's knowledge of tree growth and how that helped her select a campsite. The other examples provided by the student also need further explanation to enrich the response.

Sample Student Response #2

Annotation: The student lists details from the story that describe how "nature works," but does not relate how Billie's actions show an understanding of the setting. For example the student could have more thoroughly explained why Billie hung "her hammock high," by providing information about Billie Wind's knowledge of types of mosquitoes and how that influenced her placement of the hammock. Additionally, the student could have explained how Billie knew that the camp area would be dry.

Sample Student Response #3

Annotation: The student responds by stating that "Billie Wind understands her setting." The student partially explains Billie's understanding of her setting..."She knew the mosquitoes would bite," and supports this information by adding "so she put her bed higher than the Mosquito's could reach." The student then provides another example of Billie's understanding of the setting however, the response lacks the support needed to explain why the mother alligator and her young should be avoided.
