| Clarifications: Each clarification provides an explanation of the indicator/objective to help teachers better understand the concept. Classroom examples are often included to further illustrate the concept. While classroom examples could be shared with the students, the intended audience for the explanation/clarification is the classroom teacher-not the student. In addition, classroom examples may or may not reflect the assessment limits. |

Children learn about geometric figures and their attributes first through hands-on experiences with concrete materials. When students explore and manipulate models of 3-dimensional geometric shapes, they begin to notice the plane figures that make up these shapes. They are also noticing the characteristics of the different plane figures. In order for students to represent a plane figure, they must think about the attributes of the shape. Involve students in experiences in which they are constructing plane figures (e.g., drawing on grid paper). In addition, exploring and creating designs with pattern blocks provides opportunities for students to think about the attributes of geometric figures, and it helps to develop spatial sense. Note: The shapes included in a set of pattern blocks are hexagons, rhombi, squares, triangles, parallelograms, and trapezoids. While these blocks are technically 3-dimensional shapes because they have dimension (e.g., the hexagon is actually a hexagonal prism), the pattern blocks are named with 2-D shape names. Help students to notice the 2-D shapes on the pattern blocks (e.g., a triangle on the top of the green triangular prism). |
