Lesson Seeds: The lesson seeds are ideas for the indicator/objective that can be used to build a lesson. Lesson seeds are not meant to be all-inclusive, nor are they substitutes for instruction. |
Standard 1.0 Knowledge of Algebra, Patterns, and Functions |
Topic A. Patterns and Functions |
Indicator 2. Identify, copy, describe, create, and extend non-numeric patterns |
|
Objective b. Represent and analyze repeating patterns using no more than 3 objects in the core of the pattern |
Lesson Name |
|---|
| Pattern Fun |
Materials needed |
| Prepare baskets of objects for students to use for pattern experiences (e.g., a basket containing different colors of connecting cubes) Pattern cards, prepare ahead of time modeling objects included in baskets |
Activities |
|
Students copy a pattern and then create their own patterns using pattern cards and objects from the baskets. Vary objects to meet the needs of students at different levels. The more attributes contained in the basket, the higher the level of complexity. The contents of a single basket may include one of the following:
For example, color tiles may be provided for students to copy an ABC pattern that has been illustrated on a pattern card. Include at least three repeating parts for students to copy.
An example for an AAB pattern card and a basket of toy dinosaurs:
Pictorial pattern cards could be drawn, computer generated, or created by making a pattern with the actual items and then photographed. First, students copy and describe the pattern provided. Next, they extend the repeating part of the pattern. Finally, students create their own repeating pattern and describe the pattern to classmates. |
