Standard 6.0 Knowledge of Number Relationships and Computation/Arithmetic

Topic A. Knowledge of Number

Indicator 1. Apply knowledge of whole numbers

Objective a. Build concept of number

Lesson Name

Counting Baskets

Materials needed

5 baskets, labeled 0-5 and counting disks (about 5 per student), connecting links or connecting cubes (about 5 per student).

Activities

Arrange six baskets in a linear sequence, each labeled with a numeral 0-5.

Six baskets

Students take turns counting and placing the correct number of objects in the corresponding labeled basket using a set of the same objects (i.e., same color disks). Allow all students in the group to verify the quantity by counting aloud. Each time a child finishes a count ask, "How many?" (See Note below.) Discuss the contents of the basket labeled zero and allow students to articulate why the basket is empty.

Distribute connecting links or connecting cubes to students. Instruct students to make a set (no larger than 5) and then identify the correct basket for their quantity.

Note: When first asking the question "How many?" students recount if they do not have an understanding of cardinality. Consistently asking this question will help students understand that the last number counted also represents the total number of items in the set. Students will also benefit from hearing the following comment after they have counted a set of items: "So there are 5 pretzels sticks on your plate."
