Standard 2.0 Comprehension of Informational Text

Indicator 2. Identify and use text features to facilitate understanding of informational texts

Objective e. Use online features such as URLs, hypertext links, sidebars, drop down menus, home pages, site maps, other features characteristic of online texts

Activities
  • Students should read an informational text provided by the teacher. Next the teacher will direct students to a website where students will read information about the same subject as the informational text. In a teacher-led discussion students will compare the organizational features of the informational text to the sidebars, hypertext links, and drop down menus of the online text.
     
  • The teacher will create a scavenger hunt on a specific topic. Students will locate information about this particular topic on a bookmarked website. To find all the items for the scavenger hunt, students must use features of online text. A time limit should be set for the procedure. After the time limit has been reached, teacher and students will discuss the degree of difficulty of each item/task noting the required use of online features to access the information. To extend this activity students may order the scavenger hunt items from most to least difficult to find and justify their order citing online features.
     
  • Students will access a bookmarked website on a specific subject. The teacher will direct students to follow a trail of information using hypertext links. Students will judge the quality of each link, deciding if the information about the subject becomes more general, more specific, or repetitive. After the procedure is complete, teacher and students will share their findings.
     

  • The teacher will direct students to a variety of bookmarked websites on a variety of subjects with a specific purpose for their reading and review of the site. Students will use the online features of the website to complete a website profiler. Students will record required information on the profiler to make a judgment about the usefulness of the website to their purpose. After the review of the website, students will share their findings with the class in a teacher-led discussion.
