Prior to naming and comparing shapes by their attributes, children should: have many opportunities to sort and re-sort geometric figures according to attributes, such as shape, color, and size; recognize and describe basic plane geometric shapes; and have multiple explorations with models of plane geometric shapes: circle, square, rectangle, triangle, and rhombus.
