Prerequisite Skills

Before students measure objects they need many opportunities to compare, sort, and order objects by length using mathematics vocabulary, such as longer, shorter, and about the same length. They should be able to:

  • Compare objects starting with 2 objects (the pencil is longer than the paper clip) and then moving on to 3 or 4 objects.
  • Sort objects into 2 groups (as long as; not as long as); then into 3 groups (shorter than; as long as; longer than)
  • Order objects by length
