School Improvement in Maryland

Sample Assessments: Each sample assessment item gives an idea of how an assessment item on the MSA might be presented. The items appropriately measure the content of the VSC and may be formatted similarly to those appearing on the MSA; however, these are sample items only and have not appeared on any MSA form.

Standard 2.0 Knowledge of Geometry

Topic A. Plane Geometric Figures

Indicator 1. Recognize and apply the properties/attributes of plane geometric figures

Objective a. Identify, name, and compare triangles, circles, squares, rectangles, and rhombi by their attributes

Sample Assessment Question (SAQ) Item

Proficient
Student names and describes attributes of each shape when shown a model. Student can also make comparisons of these shapes (e.g., a square and a rectangle both have 4 sides; a triangle has fewer sides than a rhombus).

In Process
Student names and describes attributes of each shape when shown models but has difficulty in making comparisons for all of these shapes.

Needs Development
Student identifies shapes (e.g., When directed, "point to the rectangle," student can find the rectangle.), but student has difficulty when teacher points to rectangle and says, "What is this shape called?" Student is unable to make comparisons of shapes based on their similarities and differences.
