Read this story about two girls named Molly and Miracle, 'Root Beer and Banana'. Then answer the following. How do Granddaddy and Molly feel about each other? In your response, use events and details from the story that show how Granddaddy and Molly feel about each other. Write your response on the lines below. |
| Sample Student Response #1 |
Annotation: The reader responds, "they have a pretty good relashonship" and references the text "that Molly seems like she doesn't like being called Squirt and granddaddy just doesn't know." To improve this response, the reader must adjust a slight misread. There is a disconnect between a "good relashonship" and Molly's not liking the nickname her grandfather gives her and his not being aware of her dislike. However, if the reader clarifies that "granddaddy just doesn't know" and if he did know would cease calling her Squirt and points out the pleasant activities Molly and granddaddy enjoy, the determination of a "good relashonship" is valid. |
| Sample Student Response #2 |
Annotation: The reader answers, "Granddaddy and Molly feel very close with eachother" and offers text support about Granddaddy calling her Squirt and offering to purchase what she wants "at the harware store." The reader further clarifies this idea by stating "when someone calles you a speuchel name, or asked something to you, you and that person that does all of these thing must be very close to you." To improve this response the reader might show that Molly reciprocates Granddaddy's feeling by her actions-squeezing his hand in thanks, going fishing with him, anticipating Granddaddy's positive response when she asks for two ice pops, etc…which could indicate that Molly would not have asked were she not able to predict his response. |
| Sample Student Response #3 |
Annotation: The reader responds "They feel good about each other" and uses text support that "Granddaddy is probably felling good that Molly met a new friend" and when Molly "sees him and Miste Mac talking lik 'good old friends', she is happy." To improve this response, the reader can offer further text support for the idea that Granddaddy is happy about Molly's new friend. In addition the reader can draw a conclusion that when people like or "feel good about each other" each person enjoys seeing the other person be happy. |
| Sample Student Response #4 |
Annotation: The reader answers "There are realy close and they love each other more than anything world…" and concludes "they also have a lote of respect fore each others friends." To improve this response, the reader needs to offer text support for their relationship like going fishing together and visiting Mr. Mac's store and support for the claim of respecting each other's friends like Granddaddy purchasing the ice pop for Miracle and Molly enjoying seeing Granddaddy and Mr. Mac converse. Finally the reader could conclude that because Molly and Granddaddy love each other they respect each other's choices of activities and friends. |
